Margin is profit ÷ revenue. Markup is profit ÷ costs. They are related but not the same.
How This Calculator Works
What it does
This calculator shows how much you keep after costs, and expresses that as both a margin and a markup percentage.
How the calculation works
Profit = revenue − costs. Margin % = (profit ÷ revenue) × 100. Markup % = (profit ÷ costs) × 100. If costs are zero, markup is shown as 0%.
Why it matters
Trades businesses often price with a markup in mind, then check the margin after the job. Knowing both helps you protect cash when materials or labour move.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about this calculator and how UK trades use the figures day to day.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of selling price (revenue). Markup is profit as a share of cost. A 25% markup is not the same as a 25% margin.
Should I include VAT in revenue and costs?
For a clear profit view, compare like with like, usually net of VAT if you are VAT-registered.
What costs should I include?
Include labour, materials, subcontractors, and any job-specific expenses. For a fuller picture, add a share of overheads.
Why is my markup higher than my margin?
That is normal whenever there is profit. Markup divides by a smaller number (cost), so the percentage looks higher.
Can this replace job costing software?
It is a quick check. Total Tradesmen helps you track quotes, costs and invoices on the live job so margins stay visible as work progresses.
What if costs are higher than revenue?
Profit will be negative. That flags a loss-making job or period so you can adjust pricing or costs.
