Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about this calculator and how UK trades use the figures day to day.

What are the current HMRC car and van rates?

Cars and vans use a higher rate up to the annual AMAPs threshold, then a lower rate. The tax year and exact rates applied are shown in the calculator results, which read from the shared HMRC configuration.

Can I use my company mileage rate instead?

Yes. Choose Company rate and enter the pence per mile your business pays. That overrides the HMRC defaults for the claim total.

How does return journey work?

Enter the one-way business miles, then tick Return journey. The calculator doubles the miles before applying HMRC or company rates.

Why enter miles already claimed?

For cars and vans, HMRC uses a higher rate up to an annual threshold. Entering miles already claimed this tax year ensures only the remaining higher-rate allowance is used first.

Do electric cars use the same HMRC rates?

Yes. Cars and vans (including electric and hybrid) use the same AMAPs band structure.

What about motorcycles and bicycles?

They use their standard HMRC rates for all claimable miles, without the car and van threshold split.

Where do the HMRC rates come from?

From HMRC / GOV.UK travel mileage and fuel rates publications. Update the shared rates configuration when GOV.UK publishes new figures.
